The explorer lands on three separated reels and the ordinary line looks broken. During the right Book of Dead free-spin feature, that can still be the start of a payout: the selected expanding symbol follows an additional rule that does not require its reels to be adjacent. Knowing when that exception applies is the key to this otherwise compact slot.
Demo availability may vary by location. You must meet the legal age in your jurisdiction; the free-play button does not record acceptance.
Play’n GO released Book of Dead on 14 January 2016. The official rules sheet identifies the desktop game as bookofdead, game ID 310, and the mobile version as bookofdeadmobile. It has five reels, three visible positions per reel and up to ten active paylines. The Book acts as both Scatter and Wild; regular symbols include Rich Wilde and Egyptian figures alongside card ranks.
The Play’n GO profile shows how different this fixed-field game is from the studio’s grid slots. Within the Ancient Egypt category, shared tomb imagery does not imply shared rules: Mummy’s Gold uses a tripling Wild instead of Book of Dead’s selected expanding symbol.
For adults of legal gambling age in their location. Set a budget you can afford to lose.
The official rules sheet lists 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% configurations. The highest figure is one option, not a promise about every copy of Book of Dead.
The reference rules allow between one and ten paylines, activated in numerical order. Read the active-line count and total stake together. A line payout is calculated using the amount staked on that line; it is not automatically the same multiple of the entire spin cost.
That makes Book of Dead a useful lesson in units. A large number beside Rich Wilde can look spectacular, but its cash meaning depends on the line stake and the number of qualifying lines. The separate Scatter table uses total-bet units. Mixing those two tables produces inflated figures without changing a single number in the source.
The selected symbol gives the feature its tension
Before free spins begin, an ordinary symbol is selected for the expanding role. The feature then asks a concrete question: will enough instances of that particular symbol land to create an additional award? A screen containing attractive symbols of other types can still produce ordinary wins, but it does not replace the selected-symbol condition.
This focus is the game’s strength and its limitation. You can explain the feature without a long glossary, yet a weak selected-symbol sequence leaves little else to develop. Reactoonz provides a contrasting Play’n GO design in which successive clusters feed several grid effects rather than one chosen symbol.
Who Book of Dead suits
Book of Dead suits someone who wants a traditional reel layout with one substantial bonus rule. It is less suitable if you expect a persistent grid, frequent feature variation or a low-volatility experience. Its age and familiarity are useful for finding comparisons, but neither is an argument that a particular operator supplies the best mathematical version.
Best for
Readers learning how expanding-symbol awards differ from normal paylines
Players who prefer a compact five-reel field
People willing to check active lines and payout units before comparing wins
Not ideal for
Players seeking a bonus with several evolving systems
Anyone who finds optional post-win gambling difficult to decline
Readers who assume every Book of Dead version has 96.21% RTP
The Book substitutes for other symbols in ordinary winning combinations and also acts as the Scatter that starts the feature. Three or more Scatters award ten free spins. The two roles should be read separately: a substitution on a line is not itself the same event as landing enough Scatters across the field.
Before the feature begins, the game randomly selects an ordinary symbol as the special expanding symbol. It remains the selected symbol for the sequence described in the checked rules. The player does not choose it by timing a button press or selecting a preferred Egyptian figure.
Ordinary wins are evaluated before expansion
The rules first recognize regular winning combinations. The selected symbol can then expand to cover all three positions on its reel when doing so creates an additional qualifying award. The expanded-symbol result does not require the relevant reels to be adjacent in the same way as an ordinary left-to-right line combination.
This is a specific feature exception, not a new rule for every symbol on the screen. If the selected symbol is the explorer, separated card-rank symbols do not gain the same expansion behaviour. Nor does one appearance necessarily expand just because it is the selected type: the additional award condition still has to be met.
Three or more Scatters during the feature award another ten free spins. A retrigger extends the opportunity to use the selected-symbol system; it does not guarantee that the extension pays more than the preceding batch.
A line-bet example
The official table lists a five-symbol Rich Wilde award of 5,000 times the line stake. With a €1 total stake spread evenly across ten active lines, each line carries €0.10. One qualifying five-Rich-Wilde line therefore pays €500. It is not automatically €5,000 simply because the total spin cost was €1.
An expanding-symbol result can affect more than one active line, so the number of qualifying lines must then be included. Keep that second step explicit instead of switching silently from a per-line figure to a full-spin multiplier. The paytable guide explains the unit check in more detail.
The optional card gamble is separate
The reference rules allow a post-win gamble on the colour or suit of a face-down card. A correct colour prediction doubles the amount risked; a correct suit prediction quadruples it. The sheet limits the sequence to five successive attempts and a 2,500-coin threshold. Availability and supplied settings should be checked in the actual game.
If a completed win is €8, collecting retains that payout. A colour gamble can produce €16 or €0, while a suit gamble can produce €32 or €0. The original paid spin still belongs in the net-result calculation. These alternatives are not a method of making an ordinary win safer.
Reading the rules behind an expanded-symbol result
This review combines the current developer page with Play’n GO’s GRS0595 rules sheet, checked on 15 October 2026. The sheet provides line settings, feature rules and mathematical configurations. It is a documentary review, not a claim that the author completed a cash session or measured the game’s return.
For a feature recording, identify the selected symbol before reading the reels. Then distinguish the ordinary line awards from the later expansion. A final screen full of one symbol may be the result of expansion rather than the original landing pattern. That distinction is essential when explaining how the payout was formed.
Check the line count and stake as well. Two videos can show the same selected symbol and a similar expansion while using different line stakes or total bets. The big-win verification guide helps reconstruct the relevant settings before comparing the money amounts.
The reference sheet also illustrates why technical fields need interpretation. Its maximum-exposure entry is a currency-model figure associated with the configured stake range, not a number to paste into a maximum-win field with an × sign. We keep those units separate instead of turning 500,000 of reference-currency exposure into an invented 500,000× claim.
How to play Book of Dead responsibly
A selected high-paying symbol can make every free spin feel as though a particular outcome is waiting to happen. The selection does not promise that enough instances will land. Set limits before the feature and decide separately whether you will decline the optional gamble when a payout arrives.
01.
Read total stake and active lines.
A per-line paytable value needs the line stake before it can be converted into money.
02.
Treat the selected symbol as a condition.
Its selection does not guarantee a full expansion or make a missed symbol due on the next spin.
03.
Decide about the gamble in advance.
Collecting a completed win and risking it on another card outcome are different transactions.
Symbols and Paytable
The Book is both Wild and Scatter. Rich Wilde is the highest-paying ordinary character in the reference table, with Egyptian figures and card ranks below him. Regular line awards use the line stake and pay left to right; the Scatter awards use a separate total-bet table.
The displayed table keeps regular-symbol awards in line-bet units. Do not compare a 5,000 line-bet entry directly with a 200 total-bet Scatter entry as if both used the same stake. The selected expanding-symbol rule changes the qualifying arrangement during free spins, not the need to identify the correct payout unit.

Only the highest eligible win on each selected line is paid. A five-symbol line should not also be counted as separate four-, three- and two-symbol wins. For several active winning lines, calculate each eligible line and then combine them according to the rules.
Book of Dead RTP, volatility and maximum win
The rules sheet lists five alternatives: 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%. On €200 of cumulative stakes, the first two correspond to theoretical losses of €7.58 and €11.50 respectively. That €3.92 difference is a model comparison, not a prediction for one session. The sheet classifies volatility as 10, very high, on its own scale. That describes a different property from RTP and should not be converted into a universal threshold shared by other studios. Use the RTP-checking guide to identify the percentage in the version actually supplied.

How to interpret the numbers
Key point 1
Very high volatility allows uneven results even when the mathematical RTP is comparatively high. The selected bonus symbol does not guarantee a useful expansion before the spins end.
Key point 2
On a phone, read the total stake and active lines before interpreting a paytable value. A smaller panel can make the line-bet and total-bet distinction easier to overlook.
Key point 3
96.21% is one documented configuration. The same game name can accompany 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% or 84.18% in the reference sheet.
Book of Dead on mobile
The official sheet documents separate desktop and mobile identifiers and shows the mobile interface retaining the five-reel field, stake information and menu access. That supports mobile availability as a product format, but not a claim about performance on every phone. Before using it, locate the help panel and verify that the line and coin settings match the numbers you are reading.

Book of Dead compared with other games
Legacy of Dead is the closest comparison for an Egyptian expanding-symbol feature, while Mummy’s Gold uses a different Wild multiplier and a 15-line structure. Reactoonz is a useful contrast within Play’n GO: its cluster-and-charge system asks you to follow a whole developing grid instead of one selected symbol.

Ten free spins select an ordinary symbol that can expand under a separate award rule; qualifying Scatters can add another ten spins.
Regular awards are expressed per line, while Scatter awards use total bet. The two units must not be combined without conversion.
A fixed-line slot with tripling Wild substitutions and retriggerable free spins; the card gamble remains optional.
Do not confuse the low-volatility category with the risk of committing a completed win to a colour or suit choice.

Book of Dead’s strongest distinction is the expansion rule. Compare that rule, the active lines and the supplied RTP before comparing a familiar explorer or a large paytable number.
Other Play’n GO games to compare with Book of Dead
For another tomb-themed interpretation, the Legacy of Dead review examines the related feature on its own terms. Similar artwork does not justify copying a configuration, stake limit or bonus description between titles.
Publication status:
Play’n GO’s current product page and GRS0595 rules sheet checked on 15 October 2026. The review distinguishes the original title, reference settings and operator-specific configurations.
Mechanics — 3.9/5, weight 30%.
The selected expanding symbol provides one clear exception to ordinary line evaluation and gives the feature a strong focus.
Pace and variety — 3.2/5, weight 25%.
The feature has a recognizable objective, but the base game and repeated selected-symbol checks offer limited variety.
Distinctiveness — 3.5/5, weight 20%.
The explorer and expansion concept form a coherent identity, though the surrounding line-slot structure is conventional.
Rules and controls — 3.6/5, weight 15%.
The official rules specify configurations and units, but line-bet versus total-bet values require more care than a quick glance suggests.
Presentation — 3.8/5, weight 10%.
A compact field and distinct character hierarchy keep the central feature readable without a dense set of overlays.
How the total is calculated.
3.9 × 0.30 + 3.2 × 0.25 + 3.5 × 0.20 + 3.6 × 0.15 + 3.8 × 0.10 = 3.59, rounded to 3.6/5.
Evidence and limits.
The assessment uses developer documentation and published interface material. It does not claim a personal cash session, measured bonus frequency or verification of an operator’s real-money configuration.

FAQs
Is Book of Dead always a ten-line game?
The reference rules allow one to ten active lines, selected in numerical order. A supplied version may constrain the options. Read the active-line count together with total stake before converting a per-line award into money.
What starts the free spins?
Three or more Book Scatters award ten free spins. Before the sequence, one ordinary symbol is randomly selected for the special expanding role. Further qualifying Scatters can add ten more spins.
Do expanded symbols need to occupy adjacent reels?
The official feature rule allows the selected expanded symbols to form an additional award without the ordinary adjacency requirement. That exception applies to the selected symbol during the feature, not to all regular symbols in the base game.
Does a 5,000 paytable entry mean 5,000× the total bet?
Not automatically. The regular-symbol table uses line-bet units. At €1 total across ten equal lines, a 5,000-times-line-bet award on one line is €500. The separate Scatter table uses total bet.
Which RTP does Book of Dead use?
The checked sheet lists 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%. Confirm the figure in the running version instead of assuming the highest listed option is universal.
Can the optional gamble lose a completed win?
Yes. A wrong colour or suit prediction loses the amount risked in that gamble. Collecting keeps the payout; choosing another gamble creates a new risk and does not improve the already completed spin.
